Simply shipping off a generic CV to hundreds of employers will leave you discouraged and won't get you anywhere. The job market in the UAE is competitive and it's up to you to make sure you stand out and showcase your unique selling points to the right people.

Here's how you do it.

Firstly, you need to determine the reasons for why you are wanting to embark on a career change and your accompanying goals. Secondly, you need to figure out what type of lifestyle you would like to attain and the resources you need to do so. Once you have formulated a clear vision you can then move on to researching which companies can assist you in achieving your vision and how you can help them achieve theirs. You should also note that organisational cultures vary greatly across the UAE.  Be sure to do your research and find an organisational culture which you resonate with as this can make or break your experience in the UAE.

2.Cover letter

Your cover letter provides the first opportunity for you to sell your personal brand. This is the time for you to show off and communicate your unique skills, knowledge, qualifications and most importantly your personality! Organisations want to hire people who are qualified to do the job but more importantly they want to hire people who they feel they would work well with. Remember, always tailor each cover letter to the job which you are applying for. Recruiters want to understand the reasons why hiring you could result in a mutually rewarding relationship. Showcasing your detailed knowledge about the company will help you achieve this.

As you've all heard before, it's not what you know but rather who you know. This statement is particularly relevant in the UAE as the large expatriate community gives you direct access to a global network which should be taken advantage of.  It is strongly advised to go to networking events...there are plenty so there are no excuses. Make an effort to start conversations with new people and be generous with handing out your business cards, this is common in the UAE so there is no need to be shy. Another motivating factor for networking is that for the most part, verbal commitments hold greater value than written agreements in the region so generating positive conversations can be very beneficial for you.

4.Social Media

As you know, we live in a digital age where anyone is googleable so it is essential to make sure you are showcasing your desired personal brand image across all social media platforms. More specifically when searching for a job, LinkedIn is the all powerful networking tool which you should exploit. This social media platform has generously provided an open door directly into the HR departments of businesses. Connect with recruiters, research who works at the company and get a feel for the company culture. Most importantly always make sure you have an up-to-date and detailed profile.

If you are able to channel all of your energy into these four key activities you will certainly reap the rewards and land the interview for your dream job.

Tip of the day: If you've ever considered the UAE as your next career move you should know that IT jobs, VAT jobs and Manufacturing jobs are currently rife in the UAE and are employers are highly interested in recruiting international talent.
