10 Tips for a Winning Resume

Crafting a winning resume is all about creating your personal brand and showcasing your uniqueness. It is imperative to remember that anyone can acquire the right qualifications for a job throughout their lifetime but it doesn't always guarantee success in a particular role.

Success manifests in multiple factors, those being external such as your qualifications and work experience and those which are internal to oneself. Some internal factors may include your drive, your passions, your communication skills and your goals to name a few.

The key to crafting your  CV is to create a narrative about your life and to ensure a golden thread runs throughout the entire document and reinforces your individual brand.  Remember you only have 7 seconds to make a first impression during the initial screening process so make sure it's a good one!

Here's how you do it:

  • Formatting is always pretty standard. However, always make sure you have the document saved as a PDF to prevent it from being altered on different software systems.
  • Ensure you have a professional email address and picture. Leave the picture out if it's not professional.
  • Place your standout points at the top of the page whether it be your educational institution or your current job title.
  • Provide an explanation pertaining to the courses that you took during your studies as these can vary from person to person.
  • Get creative with your past job titles and make them more depictive of your actual roles.
  • Quantify results where possible.
  • Be consistent. Only utilise information which reinforces each other and shows a clear direction of your career path. Leave out irrelevant or short-term jobs.
  • Start sentences with strong verbs such as; developed, created, designed, lead etc...
  • Think about adding in a graph to make your CV more visually attractive. People are visual by nature and this will more likely grab the recruiter's attention. The graph could depict the variety and distribution of your skill set or anything else you wish to showcase about yourself.
  • Lastly, adjust your CV to each individual role you apply for. A standard CV is simply going to leave you stranded in the sea full of ordinary CVs.
