The United Arab Emirates has long been an international logistics hub servicing a variety of international and regional organisations, allowing them to meet and develop their objectives of global growth and new market penetration.
Sitting between Europe, Africa and Asia and bridging the gap between the east and the west, it’s only natural that term ‘supply chain and logistics’ has become closely associated with the region whether by land, sea or air. As such, the supply chain was very much seen as purely a blue-collar focus or an organisational support service. In recent years there have been strong steps forward to enable the supply chain to play a deservedly critical strategic role here in the Middle East.
The complexity of emerging markets within the Middle East, Central Asia and Africa, along with economic and political challenges have been key drivers in both supply chain. There has been an increase in investment in supply chain software in ensuring that all costs are fully optimised. As critical as cost optimisation is, it cannot be at the expense of customer service which only emphasises the importance of balancing the two together. Ensuring that relationships with customers are maintained as well as a strong balance sheet, supply chain management is working closer than ever with CFOs and their Boards in ensuring corporate objectives are met and aligned.
The most important investment for all companies so far has been in the talent they hire and retain. The increase in talent amongst regional organisations has grown by leaps and bounds with international best practices now sitting with regional organisations across industries in FMCG & Retail, life sciences and manufacturing amongst others.
