Managing different generations under one roof is one of the biggest recurring challenges that leaders face in today’s workplace. To find out how to manage the working collaboration between Generation X & Z. For the purpose of this blog, we will be concentrating on the middle generation millennials or generation Y. Millennials are not only the most educated generation in history but they also make a significant ratio of employees in the workplace today. By 2025 millennials (the generation born between 1980 and 2000) will make up 75% of the world's working population.

A recent report issued by HSBC Private Bank asserts that the Middle East is home to the highest proportion of millennial entrepreneurs in the world. 63 percent of the business owners screened in the Middle East were aged 35 years and under. This can signify the intelligence of millennials and their rejection of micromanagement. Below are some tips on the best way to manage millennials in the workplace.

1. Be mentors, not bosses 

The technology company Qualtrics has released a recent study that shows millennials are not lazy, but they just question the rules. They measure their work by achievement instead of the number of hours logged. They do not deal well with scheduled breaks, dress codes and strict regulations which explains why most entrepreneurs today are from the millennial generation. Leaders should take care and avoid acting like strict bosses and instead of focusing on their presence in the office and working hours, focus on results instead.

2. Encourage collaboration

According to a recent study, 88 percent of millennials prefer a collborative workplace over a competitive one. Communication and collaboration within the workplace stimulate the generation of different and diverse ideas. Collaboration between team members allows and enables millennials to be more effective and promotes healthy employee relationships which is one of the important things that millennials look for.

3. Create a strong company culture

Millennials value company culture over everything else as they are attracted to join a business that mimics their personal values and goals. They need to feel that the reason they work goes beyond making money and has a deeper meaning to it. They are motivated and encouraged by feeling that they are part of something bigger and more important.

4. Recognise

The millennial generation is almost addicted to getting recognised. One of the reasons for their presence on social media is their longing for approval by not only their leaders but also their peers. A strong employee recognition and reward system will act as a motivation to maintain and improve their performance.  

While the arrival of millennials in the workplace can be a challenge to leaders, it is also a blessing in disguise. The millennial generation is not only tech savvy but they have the ability to juggle multiple talents in order to discover their true potential. They are constantly challenging themselves and pushing boundaries to create a culture of innovation. Diligent leaders will be able to make the most out of having savvy millennials as a part of their team.
