The human resources management team have a lot of responsibilities that range from defining needs of attracting more talent to the business and recruitment, to looking after employee development and advancement. The human resources function happens to be very dynamic and ever-changing in order to fit the changing organisations and market trends. There are HR trends emerging that redefine the employer-employee relations which in return affects the business flow of an organisation.

Employee experience

Companies are no longer only focusing on the “company experience” and they are shifting their concentration to the “employee experience.” The latter encapsulates what the employees encounter, observe and feel through their employment journey. Psychological safety is one of the most important factors affecting the employee experience. Employees must feel safe and supported by the leadership while at work in order to be productive and loyal to the organisation . Each step in the life cycle of an employee can be extremely important and can greatly impact the progress of the employees and the functionality of an organisation. International practices have deemed employees to be the most important assets since without them there is no business. This trend has become so essential that if the HR team of a certain entity does not keep up with it, it is most likely that the business will close down. An employee will not opt to stay in an organisation that does not put him or her first when other entities are readily looking after the well-being of their employees. Companies are concentrating on diversifying their teams as a way of augmenting the employee experience. A diverse team means having people who come from different genders, ethnicities and backgrounds and this in return means fresh blood, innovative ideas and different perspectives. General Motors has recently appointed the first female CFO of 39 years old which makes her the first in the 110-year history of the automotive industry. This is all a part of the employee experience. Besides Hershey's, GM is the only enormous firm to have both CEO and CFO positions occupied by females.

Flexible work arrangements

Recently, we have been hearing a lot about companies that are adopting flexible work arrangements like allowing their employees to work remotely. According to a survey by Flex Jobs (2015), 82 percent out of 2600 respondents are more loyal to their employees because they are able to work with flexible arrangements. Some companies have proposed and implemented the idea of working four days a week instead of five while paying their employees the same salary amount. While some argued that this will not allow the workers enough time to get the work done, the levels of employee productivity were shown to go on the rise. Nowadays, millennials make up most of the workforce and they also happen to be the generation with the highest number of entrepreneurs. This explains why employees in the current workforce are more productive with less bureaucracy.

Employee Branding

For any organisation to thrive, they must brand their employees as subject matter experts. For instance, Cooper Fitch regularly offers their employees training sessions to ensure that their employees become brand ambassadors who excel in their fields which in return improves the credibility of the business. It is an essential tool for companies that are trying to stand out from the crowd and are aiming to attract clients and top-level talents. Companies that invest in enriching the knowledge of their employees by providing online learning systems and constant training programs ensure that their workforce is in line with the ongoing market trends.

Keeping up with the HR trends and ensuring their implementation will ensure that your business never falls off the grid. One of the greatest contributors to the premature deaths of DVD stores is their failure to keep up with the changing industry. In 2018, workplaces should look forward to implementing improvements and changes. With today’s rapidly changing marketplace, any organisation that fails to implement today’s HR trends will most likely cease to exist.
