Based on a study conducted by leadership development consultants Jack Zenger and Joseph Folkman, more than 300,000 business leaders were asked to rank the top competencies from a list of 16 key leadership skills. While the old aphorism might dictate that some people are natural born leaders, you need to acquire certain skills in order to become a great leader.

They inspire others

Employees follow a leader who they are inspired by. Exceptional leaders have a great ability to visualise the future, articulate it and encourage their employees accordingly. Innovative leaders have the ability to think outside the box and galvanise their team towards achieving their goals. If you correctly inspire your team, they will not follow you because they have to but they will follow you because they want to. The more you inspire them, the more benefits they see from following in your footsteps

They are honest

Honesty and integrity are the foundation blocks of leadership. Great leaders are honest, transparent and have a high level of integrity. The game of leadership has no moral shortcuts and acting as a role model and leading by example requires a manager or a leader to be candour and say the truth. This also means that they will never be afraid to admit their failure and consequently learn from it. If a leader never fails and is never honest about it, it means he or she will never push boundaries or evolve.

They are problem solvers

Creativity and innovation should be at the heart of any business and as a leader managing a large team, your problem-solving skills should be unprecedented. Business leaders are faced with challenges on a daily basis. A resourceful leader can grow and find innovative solutions to problems. They also have the ability to coach their team and allow them to develop problem-solving skills. Leading an organisation requires sharp analytical skills and critical thinking. Foremen make decisions every day and without the ability to tackle these decisions and all the problems that happen as a result, a leader will never progress.

They are communicators

A leader with good communication skills might sound easy but in practicality, it needs time, effort and skill. To acquire good communication skills, your strategy needs to be compelling, concise and clear. Managers deal with a wide variety of people on a daily basis and their ability to correctly frame their message is important. Moreover, listening effectively and knowing when to interact will allow you to engage better with your team and communicate problems and solutions competently.

They depict soft skills

People perceive leaders to have a very strong personality. An effective leader must acquire important soft skills along the way in order to master dealing with their employees. As a leader, you may often be the person delivering the news. Providing information with empathy and in a tactful way is very important. Showing compassion and being understanding is one of the ways you can encourage productivity in your employees. Connecting with your team on a personal level will encourage them to work harder for you and engage better with your business.

Leading with greatness requires effort, time and specific skills. As the head of an organisation, great responsibility lies on your shoulder employees look up to you. Whether you are giving credit or acknowledging mistakes, a good visionary must exhibit certain traits that lead them to success.
