Many managers might be sceptical about allowing their employees to work remotely or from home. The emergence of a mobile workforce is a trend that came up as a result of technological advancements. A study conducted by International Workplace Group (IWG), more than 50 percent of UAE employees work remotely every week and more than half of those do so for at least half of the week. While opinions might be split into half with some supporting the idea and others disputing its effectiveness, there are great benefits to hiring remote workers.

Saves cost

Working remotely does not only save the employee’s cost of commuting to work 5 days a week but it also cuts down on company expenses. As an employer, you are obliged to provide your employees with the most comfortable environment that allow them to work for long hours including office aesthetics such as electricity, internet and renting space.  A significant amount of expenses go into paying for an extra seat or expanding your workplace in order to bring in a new employee. It will also reduce absenteeism, sick leaves, tardiness and all the consequent costs associated. Moreover, you are saving money if employee expenses are reduced. In other words, when an employee does not spend money on takeout during lunch hour or travel expenses, their monthly salary amount will be reduced accordingly which benefits the financial status of your organisation or business.

Increases productivity

Productivity is always a major concern for managers in terms of how it hinders the business performance. The IWG survey reported that flexible working hours and telecommuting increases the employees’ productivity by up to 85 percent. Remote workers do not get exposed to office distractions, the pressure of staying on their desks for long hours and they have great autonomy. Allowing the employees to work in flexible locations will reduce the boundaries they can function within. For instance, if an employee is sick and his or her colleagues will not feel comfortable in fear of their illness spreading, working remotely will be ideal and will not disrupt the flow of business.  Employees will also have the opportunity of staying away from office politics and learning to work independently which consequently leads to boosting their productivity.

Wider talent pool

If you are trying to widen your candidate pool, then hiring remote workers is a great option. Skilled workers always consider the location at which they will work before joining an organisation. Removing the restricted locality factor from your search for the right employee will broaden the radius of your search and allow you to penetrate top-tier talents. This competitive advantage will allow you to hire the best people in the market as you might not be able to find what you are looking for in a certain geographical district. Also, this will give you benefits over your competitors who might be hiring using traditional methods or have not considered hiring remote employees.

Working remotely is one of the biggest transformation drivers in today’s workplace. Allowing your employees to telecommute will make them work more comfortably which in turn increases their loyalty to your business and boosts their productivity levels. You will expand the horizons of your talent pool internationally and cut great costs. Hiring remote workers and implementing correct telecommuting strategies will allow you and your employees to work without boundaries.
