The Art of Managing Different Personalities

Below are the five personality types you have at work and how to manage each of them.

Wilhelm Reich and Alexander Lowen set the foundation for the personality types you will encounter in life. Fortunately, they also incorporated important self-explanatory characteristics and ways to approach each character.  Below are the five personality types you have at work and how to manage each of them.


Employees with the personality of a creator happen to be good observers who can describe their environments, surroundings and situations in great detail. This character has very little dissociation between perception and feelings. They never fail to notice what is happening around them and always take themselves outside of the situation when narrating what is happening. Creators are known to be flexible, driven by sensation, aesthetically-aware, and primarily driven by sensation and intellect.  Because of their disassociation between feelings and ideas, it might be hard to engage with creators via verbal intimacy or through conversation. The best way to engage with creators in the workplace is via a clear and objective explanation of your ideas. Due to their love of creating or crafting, they learn best by physically engaging with their environments which makes them excel in jobs that require ingenuity such as multimedia, writing and translation.


Communicators are usually concerned with justice and fairness. While they might actually need a lot of care and support, they defensively react by acting independent. This person lives by the motto, “Where there is a will, there is a way.” They can adapt really well to their needs of work but if their will is decreased or they lose their way, their work performance will consequently be affected. People with a communicator personality have a lot of ideas and they usually communicate them verbally.  With all their positive characteristics, communicators might not be able to sustain their work relationships or jobs due to their intense yet short-lived involvement and motivations in projects. Communicators usually perform well in their workplace when they are treated fairly and that their voice is heard regardless of their hierarchal position.


Includers have great hearts and always aim to please as many people as they can. They happen to be very creative and can have multiple goals and endeavours to work on. However, it is very common for a person with this character to show a tendency for grandiose ideas and big plans that they might not be able to live up to. It is very easy to start a conversation with includers as they have a very warm character. Usually, they are everyone’s favorite person because of their kind hearts and approachable personality. They are very inclined to gratifying objects and can fail to complete what they are working on. The best way to manage includes is to make sure they are given precise tasks with a strict timeline as they might offer to help you with your own work while not being able to finish theirs. Includers make great customer service officers and can work well in any client servicing based job.


The name says it all because inspirers have the ability to influence and inspire those around them. They are very adept at any job that requires power such as politics, corporate business or academia. They make great leaders and bosses as they are also able to read the people that they work with and understand coherently what their job requires of them. However, due to their love of power, an inspirer can be unnecessarily competitive and can violate the right of others unintentionally. It can be quite difficult to establish a working alliance with an inspirer because they have their own working style and they like to work at their own pace. The best way to manage an inspirer is by staying calm during any confrontation. Inspirers should be spoken to with straight solid facts as they have a hard time accepting and believing opposing points of view. You can expect an employee with a “consolidator” personality to be very kind, pleasant and sometimes even self-sacrificing. They often volunteer to help others and assert their own desires just for the sake of others. They have a very cheerful expression most of the time and usually take pride in the amount of pressure they can take. The mind of a consolidator is can be very orderly but they can obsessively ruminate small and minor details or problems that they can get distracted from what they are working on. Despite their expertise and knowledge in their field, they hesitate to take leadership and often come as the second in command which sometimes makes them work below their actual abilities. The best way to work with consolidators and manage them is by allowing them to be independent and express their opinion since they tend to suppress their emotions. Because consolidators have a great sense of perfectionists, focus on details and are helpful people, they work well as social workers, executive assistants or researchers.  


Achievers, in other words, can be called “workaholics.” They happen to be very natural, mature and they have a rigid character. Since achievers trust information and intellect more than emotions, it is always worthwhile to communicate with achievers using results. These characters plan out their life around accomplishing goals and the way they do business is no different. They have a very linear way of thinking and a good concentration but do not happen to be very creative. People with this character can make great salespeople and managers because they stay committed towards their goal. Because they are always trying to stay one step ahead of the game, it is not good to enter a conflict with this type even if they have done a mistake. It is always good to approach achievers from a logical point of view and by presenting the big picture instead of concentrating on the small details.


In fact, we all have the five personalities in us to varying degrees. Nonetheless, understanding the characters and personalities of your employees can be deemed a very powerful and important weapon. While all personalities have the ability to perform their job, having basic knowledge about how to manage different characters in the workplace can yield much better results.
