Gallup recently conducted a study about employee engagement in the UAE and the results we shocking! They concluded that over 85% of employees are disengaged from the workplace which isn't  beneficial for employees or employers. Employees are left unhappy and demotivated while employers are left with underproductive employees and decreased profits. Employee's lack of enthusiasm seems to be a trending issue across the globe and I urge our leaders to rise up to the challenge and turn this situation around! Below are four tips you can adhere to if you wish to inspire and motivate your employees as their leader.

While leadership styles may vary according to different circumstances, there are 4 dimensions of leadership which can be applied to any leadership style in order to create a more effective leader, these include:

1. Providing Personal Support

This involves supporting people on an emotional level by making them feel valued for their contribution towards an organization. This will aid their personal development by increasing their sense of self-worth.

As a leader, this means that you need to show your employees that you value the work they do. These rewards do not always have to be money if you are working on a tight budget. You could simply say thank you or good job when they have done a job well or, other non-monetary rewards could include, leaving the office early, getting an extra day's leave or simply building their self-confidence or showing them empathy when it is desired.

2. Encourage Teamwork

This dimension involves creating a sense of trust among your team members in order to achieve a close and collaborative relationship. Building trust among team members is a slow process and can be developed by being honest, admitting when you've made a mistake and acknowledging that other team members may be more knowledgeable than you in certain areas.

Your team is also likely to look to you for an indication on how to conduct themselves in the workplace. This involves being a good role model for your team. In other words, you need to "walk the walk".

Achieving open communication lines is also essential for effective teamwork. Therefore, a good leader needs to be approachable. This involves being a willing and active listener and an enthusiastic problem solver.

3. Focus on Goals

As a leader, you need to give direction to your team and each member needs to understand how they will contribute to getting the team to the final goal.  Be enthusiastic and spread the business's mission in whatever endeavour you embark on. Be sure to set clear objectives for each team member that will assist in contributing to the overall goal of the business.  Make sure each goal you set in Specific. Measurable, Achievable, Timely and Realistic (SMART) in order for your team members to achieve an optimal understanding of the end goal in mind.

4. Help People Work

This involves providing the necessary tools and resources to your team members needed to meet their desired objectives. This includes providing the necessary training and development to equip your team with assets such as time, knowledge and assistance from others.

The above four points will assist you in becoming a flexible, resilient and adaptable leader in the fast-changing environment in which most businesses find themselves today.
