6 Points to Consider When Asking for a Pay Rise

When asking for a pay rise the most important thing to remember is that you are asking for what you deserve and not just for what you want.

1. Justify your request

Your request for a pay rise needs to be justified by the value you add to the company and the progress you have made since your last pay rise. Such reasons for justification may include; achieving more than just your assigned targets, having taken on more responsibilities, gaining extra qualifications, bringing in significant business to the company or simply going above and beyond while completing a designated project.

2. Research

Firstly, you need to determine if the company has the financial means to give you a pay rise.  Perhaps consult the HR department and ask them how pay rises are calculated and use that as a starting point. Secondly, you need to figure out what you'd be offered if you walked into another company tomorrow. Conduct some online research by looking at job ads for similar positions and consult the various salary survey's  and checkers which are available online.

3. Get your timing right

Arrange a face to face meeting with your boss when they are able to give you their full attention. This will give them sufficient time to prepare for the meeting and they will appreciate your ability to deal with uncomfortable issues in a professional and direct manner. Simply sending your boss an email asking for more money should never even be a consideration. If possible, try and coincide this meeting with a performance review or when the business is experiencing profitable results.

4. Remain professional

When asking for a pay rise it is imperative that you keep your emotions out of the equation and your personal reasons for needing more money private. Rather focus on why you deserve an increase; use clear examples of where you have gone above and beyond regarding your general job description and shown initiative to improve the business. This will highlight the value you add to the business and enhance your negotiation position.

5. Write a follow-up email

After having a face-to face meeting with your boss send them a confirmation email of what was discussed in the meeting. This will ensure that there is no room for any misunderstanding or confusion in the future.

6. Don't bite off more than you can chew

You are asking for a pay rise for the job you already do so don't offer to take on more responsibility if you don't have the ability or capacity to do so. Be sure to ask for additional training if required.
